Well, here we go. The whole shebang gets started tonight with the REAL Clash of the Titans, the Rumble in the East, Yanks vs Sawks. That is all well and good and all, but our concern here at MP, is well The Mets.
So, what can we look forward to? What new and mysterious ways will the team confound us? How will we be fulfilled? How will we be disappointed? What do we have to look forward to?
Admittedly, the opening salvos to the season are not exactly encouraging. Carlos Beltran will probably miss the first month. Jose Reyes at least a week or so. Dan Murphy is out four to six weeks. John Maine and Oliver Perez have been FAR from consistent. The pen seems to have several question marks. The bench is not exactly a strength. On the outside, it looks like the 70 win debacle that was 2009 is only the beginning of the downfall.
But, there have been some real glimmers of hope this Spring. David Wright has shown his power may be back, at least most of it. Jason Bay has been serviceable in the field, and he has been one of the more consistent power hitters in recent years. Johan Santana has looked good, the kids we have been salivating over looked very good.
So, what can we expect? The best answer, in the opinion of this humble blogger, is the unexpected. The first 22 games will be very important. 16 are home games, with the road trip in St. Louis and Colorado. If the team has life, is over .500, and playing well, we start getting back our bullets and can fight on more even ground. If not, it could get ugly.
Stay tuned…
