Niese Return Set For Saturday

Written by Brandon Lee 18:18 PM, May 31st, 2010

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Jon Niese threw six inning today for the Buffalo Bisons. He threw 80 pitches and allowed two runs on eight hits, no walks, and three strike outs.

Niese will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and should be ready to return to the Mets on Saturday to take on the Florida Marlins.

Really excited to get Niese back in the rotation and Fernando Nieve back in the bullpen. R.A. Dickey and Hisanori Takahashi have been doing a great job in the rotation, so I don't see them being taken out. Nieve is also very valuable in the bullpen.

Series Preview: Padres vs. Mets (05/31 ~ 06/02)

New York Mets

(26-25)

@

San Diego Padres

(30-20)

PETCO Park

Monday, May 31st, 10:05 PM EDT
PETCO Park

Hisanori Takahashi, LHP (4-1, 2.13)

Kevin Correia, RHP (4-4, 4.03)

Scouting Report:

METS: Takahashi hasn't allowed a run in his two starts since moving into the rotation. He posted back-to-back six-inning shutout performances against the Yankees and Phillies during the last homestand. The 35-year-old rookie from Japan doesn't throw hard, but his array of offspeed pitches has been very effective during his brief time in the Majors. The lefty has struck out 44 batters in 38 innings so far this season. He's also done a good job of keeping hitters in the park, allowing only one home run.

PADRES: Correia had a no-decision in his last start against the Cardinals, nearly matching St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia, as he tossed six shutout innings of his own. Correia, who hasn't won since April 28, allowed five hits but had six walks to go with five strikeouts. "His timing has been off his last few starts with his delivery," Padres manager Bud Black said of the walks. For someone who received plenty of run support early this season — the Padres scored 17 runs, five, 10 and six runs in the span of four starts in April — Correia has now been backed by two, one, one and now zero runs in his past four starts.

Tuesday, June 1st, 10:05 PM EDT
PETCO Park

Mike Pelfrey, RHP (7-1, 2.54)

Wade LeBlanc, LHP (2-3, 3.71)

Scouting Report:

METS: Pelfrey moved into a tie for second place in the National League with seven wins after seven shutout innings against the Phillies, adding a third straight shutout to New York's impressive run. Pelfrey induced three double plays and held Philadelphia's triumvirate of Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth to 0-for-10, completely locking down a team that scored six runs off Pelfrey earlier in the month. He used his splitter to overcome a lack of fastball command, which did contribute to five walks.

PADRES: When he went 2-1 with three no-decisions and a 1.54 ERA after he was promoted when Chris Young went on the disabled list, LeBlanc showed improved command of his fastball and better secondary pitches to mix in against his changeup, which is considered a plus pitch. He allowed six runs over his first six starts. But he's allowed 12 runs in his last two starts, four in 5 2/3 innings against the Cardinals in his last start. "I think more than anything it was the lack of not getting the ball in good spots," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Today I saw the ball elevated more than I have all year. There was not enough quality strikes down in the strike zone."

Wednesday, June 2nd, 6:35 PM EDT
PETCO Park

Johan Santana, LHP (4-2, 3.03)

Clayton Richard, LHP (4-3, 3.00)

Scouting Report:

METS: It's hard to be better than Santana was Friday in Milwaukee, allowing three hits in eight shutout innings — but Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo matched him pitch-for-pitch, and the Brewers won in the bottom of the ninth against a reliever. Santana has been on his game since a terrible outing in early May against the Phillies, and he's lowered his ERA by more than 1.5 runs in the four outings since.

PADRES: Richard, who throws plenty of sinking fastballs and gets his share of groundouts, elevated a couple of pitches in his last start on Friday against the Nationals and paid for it. Richard allowed four runs on four hits over seven innings. Two of those hits were home runs, including a three-run home run by Josh Willingham in the fourth inning. That marked only the second home run he's allowed all season and the first while pitching at PETCO Park. Richard later allowed a home run to Ian Desmond before leaving the game, trailing 4-2. All told, Richard walked one and struck out five.
