Happy June everyone! Here is some quick Mets news for today.
Jon Heyman has some baseball news for us:
- Oliver Perez turned down a trip to go to Florida to work with Phil Regan rather than being sent to Buffalo.
- The Mets will not release Perez and eat the $36M they owe him.
- The Arizona Diamondbacks are considering trade for any of their players now, including Dan Haren. However, a deal for Haren remains a major long shot.
Matt Cerrone had this to say about the Perez news:
- i have to think boras and perez are wishing the Mets cut ollie, this way he not only gets ALL of the $20 million or so he is due from the Mets, but he can also be a free agent and sign a new deal, even if it’s the league minimum, and get even more money from a new team… on the other hand, if ollie accepts a deal to the minors, there is no telling what that will mean for his career… he could be there forever…
This might be the case but I also think Ollie has a lot of pride and he feels that he'll lose it if he is sent down to the minors. He probably feels that he has earned the right to stay in the big leagues even when he is struggling.
- Dontrelle Willis was designated for assignment and Joe Capozzi says that the Mets have some interest in him. Andy Martino from the Daily News reports that the Mets have no interest in Willis.
- Adam Rubin reports that Daniel Murphy will play second base for the Buffalo Bisons in tonights game.
Murphy is going to have to start playing there a lot more if he wants to be the Mets second baseman. Maybe since Murphy now knows that second base might be the only position for him in the majors, he'll play it better.
