PostGame: Mets vs. Marlins ~ 08/25

The New York Mets (63-63) lost to the Florida Marlins (63-62) last night at Citi Field by the 5-4. The Mets are now at .500 and are back to fourth place in the NL East. The Mets are seven games back in the Wild Card now with five team in front of them.

Pat Misch started for the Mets and pitched pretty well. He went six inning, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits, walked none and struck out four. Once again, Misch pitched decent but the Mets weren't able to give him enough runs. Misch has now lost all three games he's started this season. He has a record of 0-3 and his ERA jumped from 3.00 to 3.50.

Alex Sanadia took the hill for the Marlins and pitched very well for first six innings giving up just one run. He throw just 60 pitches through the first six, and the Mets had no patience at the plate. In total he went 6.1, gave up three runs (two earned) four hits, gave up one walk and one strike out. He was pulled in the seventh inning after just 73 pitches.

The Marlins scored three runs in the first three inning, scoring one run in each of them.

The got on the board in the second inning, when David Wright started the inning with a single. With two outs, Josh Thole single to center field, and Cameron Maybin dove for the ball and it went the ball got past him and rolled near the warning track. Wright came all the way around to score and Thole advanced to third, to make it 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Marlins got back-to-back hits with two outs. A run came around to score after the Wes Helms singled and a Brett Mayes double high off the wall in left field, to make it 4-1.

The Marlins added another run in the seventh after a triple by Logan Morrison and an infield single by Hanley Ramierez to give the Marlins a 5-1 lead.

With Wright on first in the bottom of the seventh inning, Ike Davis tripled to the 415 mark in right-center field to bring him in to make it 5-2. Jeff Francoeur followed Davis with a single up the middle, driving him in from third to cut the Marlin lead to 5-3.

Wright started the ninth inning with a long solo home run to center field to make it a 5-4 Marlin lead. It was Wright's 20th home run of the year. With one out, Francoeur and Thole hit back-to-back singles. Mike Hessman pinch hit, and ground into a force out. With runners on first and third and two outs, Luis Castillo walked on four pitches and the Mets had the bases loaded against Leo Nunez. Jose Reyes then grounded out to first base to end the game, giving the Marlins a 5-4 victory.

Other Notes:

  • The Mets threw three base runners out at the plate.
  • The Mets are 15-23 since the All-Star break.
  • The Mets' bullpen scoreless inning streak came to an end last night after Ryota Igarashi gave up a run in the seventh inning. The streak lasted for 17.2 innings.
  • The Mets one, two and three hitters went a combined 0-12.
  • Jeff Francoeur had his first multiple hit game since August 6th.
  • Chris Carter is now hitless in his last five pinch hitting appearances.

Next Game:

  • The Mets will play the rubber game of this three game series with the Marlins tonight. Jon Niese takes the mound for the Mets and the Marlins counter with Anibal Sanchez. Game time is set for 7:10 PM and the game will be aired on SNY.
