Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports that the Mets are interested in giving knuckelballer R.A. Dickey a multi-year contract. Dickey is 9-5 this season with a 2.57 ERA, which is by far the best season he's ever had.
He's been one of the few bright spots for this team and what has been a very dark season.
Dickey is up for arbitration at the end of the season, meaning he is under team control. Despite this the Mets would still consider offer his an extension. The Mets have confidence that Dickey can translate his success in 2010, to 2011 and beyond.
He was originally drafted in 1996 in the first round by the Texas Rangers. He the came up in 2001 and struggled. He stayed on the for five more season, but saw very little success. He went to the Seattle Mariners in 2008 where he continued to struggle, and then in 2009 to the Minnesota Twins where he was slightly better, but still had a 4.62 ERA.
Now this year for the Mets he has a 2.57 ERA, which is almost too good to be true. After a season like this though, he deserves to get rewarded his a long term deal.
At age 35, Dickey might have finally found himself and being that he is a knuckelballer, he should pitch well into his 40's.
