PostGame: Braves vs. Mets ~ 04.16 GM 2

Written by Brandon Lee at 22:22 PM, April 16th, 2011

The Mets (4-11) lost to the Atlanta Braves (7-8) at Turner Field tonight by the final score of 4-0, losing both games of the doubleheader. The Mets have lost seven games in a row and have dropped 11 of their last ten games. This is the second time the Mets have been shutout this season, the other one coming in the final game against the Phillies, when Roy Halladay pitched.

Jair Jurrjens (1-0) made his first start of the season for the Braves and he pitched up right where he left off. He pitched seven innings, giving up no runs on two hits, one walk and struck out four. The Braves bullpen was just as good, going two innings, giving up no runs, no hits, no walks and five strike outs.http://photos.upi.com/topics-Atlanta-Braves-vs-Colorado-Rockies/a58b4d40809c498e016b54637e1a4175/J_1.jpg

Mike Pelfrey (0-2) tried to start for the Mets, going five innings, giving up four runs, on 11 hits, one walk and three strike outs. His ERA for the season is now 9.72. No good.

Willie Harris and Daniel Murphy were responsible for the two hits the Mets got and Mike Nickeas had a walk.. And that it as far as offensive goes. Jose Reyes' 13 game hitting streak came to an end when he struck out in the ninth inning, but the ball got by the catcher and he was able to go to first base.

Bright spot for today was that the Mets bullpen was good. Pedro Beato went two innings, giving up no runs on no hits, no walks and three strike outs. Taylor Buchholz pitched the last inning for the Mets, and gave up no runs, no hits, no walks and one strike out.

The Braves had RBIs by Larry Jones, Eric Hinske, Dan Uggla, and David Ross. The Braves had 11 hits on the night, one of them for extra bases.

Next Game:

The Mets will try to avoid the sweep, again, in game three against the Braves. TBA is set to start for the Mets, and they will take on Tommy Hanson. Game time is set for 1:35 P.M. and the game will be aired on WPIX.

Final Say:

What is there to say? This team can't win right now. They are in every game and their not getting blown out, so I guess that's a plus. And their bullpen has been doing better of late. But the problem is they can't get that big out or that big hit when they need it. Or in the case of tonight, they can't get a hit… ever. Terry Collins can't be happy right now, and I'm sure he is letting his players know about it. The Mets are off to their third-worst start in franchise history. Their seven game losing streak is the longest since 2004, and they did it twice that year. This team needs something to happen. Anything. Someone needs to step up and start crushing the ball or they need a very good start for their rotation. Something needs to happen. Anything. They have to win eventually, right? Right? Only thing to do at a time like this is drink. Heavily.

That last sentence just made my day.

Going to be an odd day today, that's for sure. Got Mets at 1:30, Rangers playoffs at 3:00 for when Mets game gets too painful to watch, capped off with Knicks playoff game at 7:00.
