Series Preview: Mets vs. Pirates (05/30 ~ 06/02)

Written by Drucifer 18:18 PM, May 29th, 2011

Pittsburgh Pirates

@

New York Mets

Citi Field
Citi Field

Monday, May 30th, 7:10 PM EDT
Citi Field

Charlie Morton, RH (5-2, 2.61)

Dillon Gee, RH (4-0, 3.83)

Scouting Report:

PIRATES: Morton battled against a left-handed heavy Braves lineup in his last start, and it was a reminder that he can't rely as heavily on his sinker against lefties. Still, Morton completed seven innings for the fifth time this year.

METS: Recovering from a four-run first inning Wednesday, Gee bounced back to retire 15 of the next 16 batters for a rain-shortened six-inning win. In his only career meeting against the Pirates, Gee pitched six shutout innings last September.

Tuesday, May 31st, 7:10 PM EDT
Citi Field

James McDonald, RH (3-3, 5.23)

R.A. Dickey, RH (2-5, 4.50)

Scouting Report:

PIRATES: After a 27-pitch first on Wednesday, McDonald settled in and retired 17 of the final 20 hitters he faced. He's had a habit of laboring through the first, though McDonald has lasted six innings in five of his last six starts.

METS: Dickey is the probable, but not definite, starter after leaving his last start against the Cubs after 2 2/3 innings with a partial tear of the plantar fascia of his right foot. Dickey's fitness will be determined by his bullpen session Sunday.

Wednesday, June 1st, 7:10 PM EDT
Citi Field

Kevin Correia, RH (7-4, 3.44)

Chris Capuano, LH (3-5, 4.94)

Scouting Report:

PIRATES: Correia became the league's first seven-game winner on Friday, and he has to be glad his next start is also on the road. Correia, now 6-1 away from home, has lasted at least six innings in nine of his 11 starts.

METS: Capuano rebounded from his four-homer outing against the Yankees with six strong innings at home against the Phillies. Capuano gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out eight, tying his season high. He is 3-6 with a 6.46 ERA against the Pirates.

Thursday, June 2nd, 1:10 PM EDT
Citi Field

Paul Maholm, LH (2-7, 3.18)

Mike Pelfrey, RH (3-4, 5.00)

Scouting Report:

PIRATES: Maholm needed just 91 pitches to hurl his third career shutout, on Saturday against the Cubs. He allowed three baserunners and finally got run support. Despite his record, Maholm has allowed two or fewer runs in seven of 11 starts.

METS: Pelfrey pitched 7 2/3 innings, but settled for a no-decision after the bullpen allowed the Phillies to rally on Saturday. Pelfrey tied a season high with 116 pitches. He struck out six, also a season high, and walked two.
