@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 21:43)

I don't own any gold now but I've always liked it as part of a strategy. Silver too. l follow metals closely and they are getting hammered now. Very difficult for mining companies to raise any money these days.

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 20:35)

* If I'd held for another two years the margin would have been < 300%.

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 20:33)

Precious metals and mining stocks have been in a lengthy recession. I don't have any mining stock but I have followed metals and have bought and sold gold and silver at profit. Gold I bought in 2004-5 I sold in 2010 at about 150% profit*. Gold I hold now is up 10-20% since Sept./2015.

@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 19:36)

Abat, am I reading this correctly, you're heavily invested in Canadian gold?

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:51)

I'm still in shock. someone call me a therapist, i need to work that trough... yikes abat!

@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:43)

Reads like a stock bloodbath!

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:33)

am i reading this wrong?

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:32)

you've taken a 70% hit in the past 5 years???

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:32)

oh my lord

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:29)

tale of two worlds - I'm talking finances here. And talking about "Salvation Burger" in another. So opposite haha

@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:22)

Fang, as I'm sure you know, over the long term (25-30 years), the highs and lows normalize in the market and the long term investor does alright. That's my plan, though I don't have quite as long as you do to let it sit.

@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:17)

Went out to shovel some snow and missed the financial roundtable. Keep it coming guys.

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:14)

and Yogi, if I were in your shoes, I agree, you need to put your money somewhere that is less volatile, so buying into one of those "payments for life" type programs (which is what I'm interpreting your 6% deal as) is a great move.

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:12)

the last international pieces are finally realizing they need to buy up the bad debt and drop the dead weight. The world won't let China collapse all the way, and the markets will rebound. But as I said, color me optimistic ;)

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:10)

yogi - color me optimistic, but I don't see this dropping us backwards. If I had the money available, I'd take the opportunity now to double down.

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:05)

Is that precious metal mining stocks or a combination of mining and hard assets?

@  abat : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:03)

yogi I have a fund that invests in gold and other precious metals (Blackrock Gold and General)

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 18:02)

This pending market doesn't look good, globally everything is coming apart, 6 months may be too optimistic

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:58)

By 2009 my pensions and annuities were fixed, but my IRA took the beating. I later converted it to a Met Life IRA guaranteeing a min. 6% on the basis. Thing is now that I have to withdraw funds because of age the basis shrinks. My net last year was less that 6% with admin fees and the loss on the growth

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:54)

I just bought a house, so I don't have extra liquid funds to put in the market, but with my 401K, I keep putting it into the same accounts, because the philosophy I subscribe to (even if it sounds scarier) is buy low. Each dip, is a lower price to buy at. (And I'm guessing your grand daughter won't be needing the school money for a little while now/

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:52)

true, but depending on the legnth of CD and the regularity of your contibutions. You may have missed the trough, and be contributing after the rebound in 6 months thereby costing an investment today 10% gain... (or you could be saving 10%, who really knows)

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:50)

Earlier this year I stopped contributing to my grand daughters 529, and put the money in a CD. When the market gets through what ever is going to happen, that CD money will still be hole and can be redirected to the 529.

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:48)

I hear too many stories of people who in 2009 moved their money out. And then missed the ride a couple years later

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:48)

yogi - i think that right there is what I was trying to allude to earlier. Usually, we're either too slow to realize the bear is coming. Or too uninformed to ride the bull.

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:46)

Back 1987-88 I converted from a riskier investment to a more conservative and avoided most of the recession losses of that time, but I didn't change back for the dot.com era and fell behind. Still got killed in 2008-9

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:46)

part of the problem with dislodging the funds are the unrealized capital gains. They'll be due someday (hopefully?) but the tax hit would certainly be within the next year...

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:44)

yes, part of my ability to not touch the funds is my age/need.

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:43)

You're young and can take that ride. But in the immediate future it might be wise to look at parking future funds in a CD or other hedge against a recession.

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:39)

i don't diversify like that. My hope (barring disaster) is that all the money in my portfolios (retirement and liquadatable) won't be used any time in the near future, so the higher rate of return (despite big dips) is directly in the market. Hopefulyl that doesn't bite me in the butt :p

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:33)

Do you have gold as part of the portfolio?

@  abat : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:32)

Actually no it is up a couple points, the rest of my portfolio got killed though

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:30)

abat, some of that gold was Geo. V souvereigns

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:28)

American Eagles which is a bullion coin like the Kugerands of the 80s, also have bought some foreign gold in online auction

@  abat : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:27)

My Blackrock Gold and General Fund also caned today so not that kind of gold.

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:26)

I believe that $1400 is coming, gold has moved through two points of resistance in the past week.

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:25)

yogi, gold as in jewelry or bars?

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:23)

I'm sitting here talking with the vendor that I have recently bought gold from, while CMF is bring up the price of gold.

@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:16)

Shit, hit Submit too soon. I meant to say, 'Not $1400 good, but in these markets it's still a solid price.'

@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:14)

$1260 is good. Not $1400 good but in these markets.

@  Canada Mets Fan : (11 Feb 2016 - 17:11)

So strange, I was going to ask today if anyone plays the markets. BIG bump for gold today.

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 14:53)

sell late, and then miss the upswing. lose lose :(

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 14:53)

typical run from stock to commodity - I don't play those games as I'd likely be behind the curve on both

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 14:51)

Gold is up $58 and over $200 since mid Dec.

@  METS FANG : (11 Feb 2016 - 14:19)

yowsers - I guess they didn't like yellen's message

@  yogib8 : (11 Feb 2016 - 14:17)

Market is taking a beating today.....scary

@  Drucifer : (10 Feb 2016 - 12:45)

I'm walking around my home like Tim Conway. I did get a good night sleep. Which has me feeling slightly better. But I'm still searching for my SW shoebox. I have narrow my search to my messy living room.
