No-one else amused by Walker walks?

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 13:11)

Between Harvey's special DL arrangement, the Dark Knight persona, the rink side seat at the garden he is easy to dislike. It's all good until he doesn't live up to his image.

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 13:10)

Flores is going to get some regular playing time, it appears, and he needs to get it going.

@  Drucifer : (30 May 2016 - 13:10)

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 13:07)

Doesn't work even. Damned irony!

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 13:06)

Edit work on my phone!

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 13:05)

AC

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 13:04)

In his head he is a legend. Hard to deal with when suddenly you look human

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 13:03)

Who?

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 13:03)

I like this guy

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 13:00)

Probably right, yog. That has been his biggest drawback in his career. Of course, up to relatively recently, he has not had to deal with negative attention too much.

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 12:58)

Harvey has never had to apologize or explain himself, doesn't know how. Nothing would make him happier than to be the center of good attention. Could get testy when someone brings up his back door departure.

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 12:54)

Here goes the test. 4th/5th/6th and (hopefully) beyond...

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 12:53)

That's my point, though. It will look like the only time he talks to reporters is when things are going his way. I guarantee that some writer will do an op piece saying something like that.

@  Drucifer : (30 May 2016 - 12:49)

Does :Rivera: starts things with a ;single; to :center:

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 12:48)

I just think he'll be so relieved he'll want to talk

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 12:47)

Well, let's see what he does the second and third times through. And I have to go with yogi's thought here. To be consistent (assuming he has a good outing), he needs to just leave today without speaking to the media. If he has a good game and then talks to reporters, that's kind of a dick move.

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 12:39)

Will he have to ask Boras for permission?

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 12:35)

If he gets a strong W he'll talk

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 12:32)

I need to see my optometrist 4 times a year, use 4 meds and have had 6 surgeries, I could be an Ump.

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 12:29)

The big question...win - lose or draw is will he talk to the media?

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 12:27)

The real test is the third time through

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 12:22)

A better SS is last season, his 1st as a closer. 27.1 IP in 27 games in non-Sv situ. 1.32 ERA with a whip of 1.06 and a 4.4:1 K:BB ratio.

@  yogib8 : (30 May 2016 - 12:19)

WC, that article is a SS of 2016 and 6 of 8 runs allowed in the non-Sv situ were in the past two day. The other two came in two games he pitched with 4 run leads and in circumstances where he needed the work. The 5 other games were clean. Familia had two bad games, he doesn't have a non-Sv issue.

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 12:19)

Solid first inning from Matt, but that has not been the problem. Let's see what happens in the 4th/5th/6th etc.

@  Drucifer : (30 May 2016 - 12:16)

He walk off the mound with his head down.

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 12:14)

Harvey really needs to be good today

@  abat : (30 May 2016 - 11:11)

Badly need a win today but then so do the White Sox

@  West Coast M... : (30 May 2016 - 09:46)

This from an article on line; "In save situations, Familia has a 1.69 ERA and 0.88 WHIP, but when he enters the game in a non-save situation, he has am 8.64 ERA and 2.40 WHIP, allowing eight runs and 15 hits in 8 1/3 innings."

@  brian stark : (30 May 2016 - 07:03)

Again, I want to make this clear, I'm not laying 100% of the blame on Collins. The pitcher still should execute. The Liberatore example is not apples to apples, though. He was brought in to a situation that he is used to being in, expected to be in. Familia is the closer. His job is not (usually) to come in when the game is tied or when we are behind, it's to close it out. Now, there are exceptions to that rule, and I listed an example of that several times, but in this case it was not applicable. If the game had gone into extra innings and he was brought in, I would have had no problem with that, because the situation was more along the lines of what he is used to facing. Bottom line? I agree, a pitcher should be expected to perform up to his capabilities, however, I also think that a manager should be cognizant of his players tendancies and try to put them in the most favorable position to succeed. Familia has been way overused already this year in too many situations that are non-save. He is on pace for 83 appearances, a ridiculously high number of games for your closer. No reason to add to that workload in a tie game in the ninth. That is the issue I have with the decision, and the repeated use of Familia in this manner is incorrect.

@  mjjm367 : (30 May 2016 - 06:20)

And I am not just talking about Collins. The ESPN announcers were all over Dave Roberts when he brought the lefty in to face Grandy. They kept saying that he should have brought the closer in for a 4 out save. Bullshit, Roberts made the right move. This season, lefty batters had been 3 for 28 (.107) against him. Roberts made the right move, Liberatore didn't execute. Both Roberts & Collins made the right move, neither pitcher came through. No excuses necessary for the pitchers, no blame deserved for the managers.

@  mjjm367 : (30 May 2016 - 06:14)

I'm not trying to get on Familia. But I don't accept the narrative that it is the manager's fault when the athlete doesn't do his job.

@  mjjm367 : (30 May 2016 - 06:12)

Familia is the best reliever we have. If he doesn't give up the runs there, then the Dodgers don't bring in their closer yet. As the away team, they hold him for a still possible save situation.

@  mjjm367 : (30 May 2016 - 06:10)

Back to the Familia thing for a minute. As Dru pointed out, there no longer was the potential for a save in a home game once it is tied after 8 innings. So does that mean that Familia is automatically unable to pitch? I can't accept that. And I'm sure that if you told Familia that, he wouldn't accept that as well.

@  Drucifer : (30 May 2016 - 01:06)

Will we be sick again tomorrow or will we be celebrating the :DarkKnight: return.

Not saying that. A pro should be able to do the job. However, if you see a tendancy and continue to act against that tendancy, that is idiocy. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results is insanity. Would not putting him out there guarantee a win? No, game was tied, we could have lost with Robles or Henderson or someone else. However, Familia has exhibited a tendancy to not perform up to his capabilities in those situations. Therefore, I believe a smart manager would not put the player in a situation where he has the tendancy to underperform. That's his job, after all. Again, as I said, there are occasions where the move is the one to make (If Familia had not pitched in several days, for example). This was not one of them, and it's not hindsight on my part. I said this as soon as he was brought in, said it when the first guy got on. Said it when the second guy got on. Et Cetera. Water under the bridge now.

@  mjjm367 : (29 May 2016 - 22:21)

So, once again, Familia walks 2 and blows it, but it's not his fault because it is not a save situation. So peformance is based upon achieving a stat? I will never buy that. Get 3 outs. That is it.

@  brian stark : (29 May 2016 - 22:19)

And it probably did. Oh well, lets get 'em tomorrow. Good night, fellas.

@  brian stark : (29 May 2016 - 22:04)

As I said, Familia does not do well in non-save situations. Avoid them at all costs. This will cost us a game.

@  brian stark : (29 May 2016 - 22:02)

And now the bases are loaded with one out and their best hitter up. I do not like this move, period.

@  Canada Mets Fan : (29 May 2016 - 22:00)

And he threw a 55 foot pitch.
