Brandon Lee: 4:05 PM: Adam Rubin reports, “Catcher Rod Barajas has accepted the Mets’ offer on a one-year, $1 million base deal. He also can achieve $1 million in easily attainable incentives, a source confirms. His arrival most greatly affects Omir Santos, who seemingly goes from the No. 1 job in the majors potentially to a backup for Josh Thole at Triple-A Buffalo. The Mets also have ex-Phillie Chris Coste and ex-Ray Shawn Riggans in camp.”
Brandon Lee: 3:44 PM: Heyman reports that the Mets have signed Rod Barajas to a major league contract for a little less than $1M.
Brandon Lee: 3:15 PM: Jon Heyman reports that the Rangers have increased their offer of $1.5M for Barajas but he is still leaning towards signing the offer from the Mets for $1M.
If Barajas signs with the Mets he would most likely become the starting catcher. With the Rangers he would be a back-up.
Brian Kalinka: 10:13 AM: According to Ken Rosenthal, the New York Mets have reportedly increased their offer to free agent catcher Rod Barajas, apparently offering him a Major League Contract.
Lately it has been reported that Barajas has been weighing different minor league contracts and that one of those was from the Mets.
Quite Frankly I don’t envision the Mets pursuing Barajas as a full-time starter, by any means. Obviously there will be a platooning situation and I think this is just to create more competition that will make it looks “smarter” to start Thole at AAA this season, or even possibly the entire season so he can further develop.
I mean seriously, if he performs like he did with the Blue Jays, he technically would be a downgrade. Last season he hit .226/.258/.403, while the Mets catchers hit .254/.305/.380
