These Players Have Been Cut

Written by Eli Goodrich 22:22 PM, April 2nd, 2010

According to Steve Popper the following players have been cut by the Mets.

Kiko Calero, Nelson Figueroa, Chris Carter, Bobby Parnell, Russ Adams, and Elmer Dessens.

Obviously, looking at these cuts we see Mejia made the team. I am not sure this is the right move ,but Omar and Jerry apparently think it is. I also can not help, but feel for Nelson Figueroa. He has done everything the Mets have asked of him and he never finds a way to stick on the opening day roster. He is out of options, and needs to go through waivers. He can be a fine longman/spot starter for this team, I just hope his days as a Met are not over. One guy who is missing from this list is Raul Valdes. I think that he should be on the team for the second lefty. He has pitched well and impressed the entire spring. He may be needed even more if Pedro becomes the eighth inning man. What do you guys think about the cuts? Should have any of these guys made the team? Let us know in the comments.

Escobar to start throwing?

Written by Eli Goodrich 23:23 PM, March 21st, 2010

The New York Post reports that Kelvim Escobar may start throwing next week, or even tomorrow.

“I think there’s a pretty good chance that I’m going to start throwing next week,” Escobar said.
“Hopefully [tomorrow]. I don’t know if they’ll let me, but hopefully — the way I feel, I should be good to start throwing now.”

Kelvim Escobar healthy and pitching right helps out our bullpen, tremendously. I just am not going to get excited until he is pitching in games. He has had this problem last year with the weak shoulder and it does not even sound like it is pain free, just feeling better. I hope the Mets make the right decision and have him wait until next week, at least.

8th inning option?

Written by Eli Goodrich 14:14 PM, February 21st, 2010

Kevin Kernan has an update this spring. Apparently, “Update: Manuel is impressed with the kid Mejia and threw him in the mix for the eighth inning role.”
This does not seem like a very good idea to me. We already have Parnell who can throw bullets without having a second pitch. Mejia needs to stay in the minors, perfecting his secondary offerings. Other options include Escobar, Green, Igarashi, and Feliciano. All of these guys have their shortcomings ,but I believe we can find a 8th inning guy out of one of them. If it does not work, later on in the season they bring some guys up.

Jarrod Washburn

Written by Eli Goodrich 20:20 PM, February 1st, 2010

A tweet from Jon Morosi has the Mets not signing Jarrod Washburn. Howard Megdal of MLBTradeRumors weighs in… “It isn’t necessarily clear that the Mets should want Washburn, of course. He was a disaster in Detroit, posting a 7.33 ERA in 43 innings with unimpressive peripheral stats (16 walks, 21 strikeouts). Now 35, he’s projected by ZIPS for a 4.59 ERA in 2010, though if his stint with the Tigers meant his production has fallen off a cliff, he won’t approach that.

For comparison, ZIPS has Jon Niese projected with a 4.57 ERA, with Nelson Figueroa checking in at 5.06. While the Mets could have used some additional pitching, it isn’t clear that Washburn is enough of an upgrade to justify a contract.”

The Mets obviously do not need any mediocore pitchers and question marks. That has been our problem for 3 seasons now. I understand we are going into the season with Santana and 4 guys named potential ,but Jarrod will just add to that problem. I am starting to accept the current rotation, I believe they will have fine years and take steps foward in their careers.

Erik Bedard

Written by Eli Goodrich 2:02 AM, February 1st, 2010

It has been well documented that the Mets missed out on all of their target pitchers. Aside from Lackey, none of them really broke my heart. Clearly, the Mets needed starting pitching. These pitchers are gone and the Mets need to look elsewhere. I do know that a potential number 2 is available.

Erik Bedard, as we all know, can be very good. I remember, prior to trading for Santana, I was excited at the idea the Mets may have a pitcher of his caliber. I am thankful that did not happen, but nows the time it should. It is understood that he is a huge injury risk ,but so was Sheets. Ben Sheets could have fit as well ,but 10 million for a player who did not pitch last year, I understand. Bedard’s season ended early last year with shoulder surgery. He will not be ready until mid May, but if he can prove that his shoulder is progressing and rehab is on schedule he should sign. He will take a pay cut from the 7.5 million he made last year. I am thinking around 4-5 million plus incentives.  Erik’s career ERA of 3.7 can help. This is the types of risks Omar needs to make. If he comes back throwing hard, the Mets rotation improves greatly.

The rotation until he would come back could be Santana,Pelfrey, Perez,Maine,Nieve/Niece. I may be in the minority ,but better seasons from Perez and Pelfrey are coming. Another option, sign Smoltz to start until Bedard is ready. Then he can be moved to the bullpen. I understand not overspending on Pineiro and Sheets ,but this move should not be passed up. Lets go Omar, make this one happen.
