Now that Terry Collins has won the job of Mets head coach, he needs to pick out the rest of his coaching staff.
Andy Martino reports that Collins will keep on pitching coach Dan Warthen. There was some speculation that he might hire his Dave Wallace as the new pitching coach, but the Mets as well as Collins were satisfied with the level of work that Warthen did last season for the Mets.
If the Mets got anything right in the 2010 season it was pitching. Dan did a great job handling this staff and I'm very glad the Mets are keeping him. This is the right move to make.
Things don't look so good for the Mets hitting coach Howard Johnson. Collins will most likely pick out a new hitting coach for the 2011 season. Johnson is expected to stay with the organization in some aspect.
I still don't understand how HoJo wasn't fired when Jerry Manuel was fired. The Mets hitters have been producing at levels that were far below expectation. I would imagine HoJo would stay on as a coach some where, I'm just not sure if it will be at the major league level or not.
Chip Hale, who was in the running for manager, will stay on with the Mets and most likely remain as the team's third base coach.
Collins is thinking about bring back fan favorite Mookie Wilson to be the first base coach for the Mets. He served as the first base coach on the Mets from 1997 to 2002 and is currently the Mets base running coach.
I wouldn't mind having Mookie back there at first base. The fans love him and that's really all the first base coach has to do, and take the shin guards and elbow pads from the batters. Unless first base coaches do something else I'm not aware of.
Dave Jauss, the current bench coach for the Mets, might be asked to take over the position left by Collins as the Mets minor-league field coordinator. Ken Oberkfell could take over that position or stay on as manager of the Buffalo Bisons.
