Both Of Castillo’s Feet Hurting

Written by Brandon Lee 11:11 AM, June 1st, 2010

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, second baseman Luis Castillo could be headed to the DL with not only pain in his left foot, but also in his right.

Castillo has been favoring his bone bruise on his left foot in such a way that his right foot is now hurting as well.

Manuel still feels Castillo can play, but it's something that they will watch carefully.

I don't understand using him in last night's game if this is the case. You're down by 12 runs, this game is way out of your reach, so why risk anything worse happening to Castillo in a meaningless at-bat? Also, if you want to DL him you lose the ability to retroactive his DL stint to a day prior.

Should have known something like this with Castillo would have blown up into a more serious problem. So I guess the Mets' "Prevention and Recovery" slogan only is in effect for a few select players.

Maine To Begin Throwing

Written by Brandon Lee 11:11 AM, June 1st, 2010

Accorindg to Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen, John Maine is expected to begin playing catch today in New York as he builds up his arm strength to make his return. Maine was placed on the DL with shoulder tendinitis on May 21st and is expected to be back in early June.

I'd rather take Maine in the rotation than R.A. Dickey just because Dickey is a career minor leaguer and Maine has had some nice starts this year.

When Maine goes six innings and gives up two or three runs that's a nice start for him. I don't expect him to throw a complete game shut out every time he goes out there. He's the type of pitcher who is going to give up six or sometimes seven innings. When Maine gives up three or less runs in a start you can usually call it successful.

Of his nine starts this season Maine was only thrown six innings or more three times. In those three starts Maine has given up a total of five runs. So as long as Maine can get to six innings, it usually means he's having a good outing.

Maine wasn't happy about being taken out of that game against the Washington Nationals when he pitched ot just one batter, but there was something wrong with him. His fastball was only getting up to 85 MPH which is way under where Maine usually is.

Firing Manuel Was Never Close

Written by Brandon Lee 11:11 AM, June 1st, 2010

According to Andy Martino of the Daily News, the Mets were never close to firing manager Jerry Manuel. After the Mets got swept in a four game series by the Florida Marlins, the Mets were upset with Manuel but they never threatened to fire him.

This is a good thing. I feel like threatening to fire a manager every time they have a losing streak or if they are going through a rough patch isn't good for the team.

Furthermore, the Mets never had a conversation with scout and ex-Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin about taking over the starting job. He was the much talked about replacement and there were rumors that it would be him to replace Manuel if he were to be fired.

I still think Melvin would be the first the Mets would call on the replace Jerry if they were to fire him. The Mets are a very confusing team because they look amazing at home but when they go on the road they are awful. The only thing you can really blame that on is the coaching staff.

I don't see Melvin being a permanent replacement. He'd probably be there for the rest of the season and then to start the 2011 year they would go with Wally Backman or Ken Oberkfell

Shake It Off

Written by Brandon Lee 1:01 AM, June 1st, 2010

The New York Mets just got embarrassed on public television, giving up 18 runs in one game. So how do the Mets move on from a loss like this? Best thing to do is just to move on and not get hung up on it.

Either way its a loss for their record and it worth just the same as a 1-0 loss.

The important thing is that the Mets have their two best pitchers going the next two games with Mike Pelfrey and Johan Santana. The Mets need to shake this off and go out there and win these next two games.

The most concerning thing for Jerry Manuel and the Mets is the lack of control they saw from their pitchers. The Mets walked a total of eight batters and every pitcher for the Mets today walked a batter except for Jenrry Mejia.

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Jon Niese threw six inning today for the Buffalo Bisons. He threw 80 pitches and allowed two runs on eight hits, no walks, and three strike outs. Niese will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and should be ready to return to the Mets on Saturday...

  • Road Problems

    Post on: 14:14 PM, May 30th, 2010

The New York Mets have the second worst road record in baseball, only behind the Baltimore Orioles, who have the worst record in baseball. The Mets are 6-16 on the road this season while they are 19-9 at home, which is the best home record in baseball. For me this ...

  • Stop hoping at home, time to win away

    Post on: 11:11 AM, May 28th, 2010

It's like a roller coaster ride this year with the Mets. We basically start off at the bottom with no expectation. We start off with Beltran, Reyes and Murphy injured, little expectation for Maine and Perez to come through for us and pondering why the hell Mike Jacobs is on the roster. ...

Today on LoudMouths Carlin and Schein took emails and one of them suggested the Mets pursue Kevin Millwood instead of Oswalt and Lee. Both Schein and Carlin seemed to agree that this was a good Plan B for the Mets.  Earlier in the broadcast the two both emphasized that if the M...

  • Nieve to start Saturday

    Post on: 19:19 PM, May 27th, 2010

Jerry Manuel confirmed Saturday's starter today, and told reporters that Fernando Nieve will be given the ball in Milwaukee Some people were thinking that Raul Valdes would get the nod instead, but we have to give credit to Nieve. He played very well as a starter for the Mets in 2009 before he got injured, and this year lost the battle for the 5th spot in the rotation to Jon Niese. ...
