Bay Could Still Return

Written by Brandon Lee 19:19 PM, August 25th, 2010

According to Omar Minaya outfielder Jason Bay could still return for action this season. He suffered a concussion after colliding into the left field wall at Dodger Stadium. He is still is having headaches for the collision and needs to go two days without having any before he is cleared by the doctors to play.

Minaya said:

"Right now, it is in the hands of the doctors. He hasn't been cleared to do baseball activities right now."

With the minor league season coming to an end, it's unlikely Bay will be able to play an rehab games.

It might not be the best idea to just throw Bay right into the action. Odds are he really wants to play but it's probably best if the Mets just keep him out the rest of the year. They are out of contention at this point anyway, so there is really no point. Only bad things could happen if he does play.

Minaya Focused On The Mets, Not Job

Written by Brandon Lee 19:19 PM, August 25th, 2010

Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York reports that Omar Minaya is more focused on improving the Mets rather than his job security.

In the recent days his job has been in question and talks of his firing have been brought up more.

On the rumors, Minaya had this to say:

"When your on a team in New York and you say you have a situation where last year did not go well, those things are going to come up. The bottom line is I know I have a job in front of me and I have to continue to do my job to the best of my abilities."

Minaya is under contract for the 2011 and 2012 seasons and for each year he's due to make about $1M.

Rather than firing him the Mets could look to just re-assign him and hire another GM to replace him.

Line-Up: Mets vs. Marlins ~ 08/25

Written by Brandon Lee 17:17 PM, August 25th, 2010

The Mets stick with the same line-up from last night's 6-5 win over the Marlins. The only difference is that Mike Pelfrey will be pitching and batting ninth instead of R.A. Dickey.

I was thinking the Mets might give Luis Castillo the start in tonight's game after his game winning hit last night, but I guess not.

Mets Fail Santana

Written by Brandon Lee 11:11 AM, August 23rd, 2010

santana.jpegTo listen to the audio commentary from last night's game, click here.

Yesterday Johan Santana pitched brilliant, but the Mets offense couldn't back him up. The Mets scored one run, and with Santana giving up two runs, clearly deserved the loss.

Santana went eight innings, giving up just the two runs on two solo home runs to Lastings Milledge and Jose Tabata. In total Santana gave up four hits, one walk, struck out nine, he threw 109 pitches, 77 of them for strikes.

Santana has now thrown three straight complete game shutouts. He is the first Mets pitcher to do that since David Cone. He also has lost two complete games in a row. The last Mets pitcher to do that was Jerry Koosman in 1977.

During those three starts, he's thrown 25 innings, giving up six runs, on 17 hits, four walks, and 26 strike outs. That's a 2.16 ERA and in those three games, the Mets have gone 1-2.

Yesterday the Mets had a chance to sweep a last place team, and get to two games over .500. Instead, they came out lifeless and let Santana to all the work.

On the seven game road trip they went 4-3 against the Houston Astros (54-69) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (41-83). It just goes to show that right now the Mets are nothing more than a .500 baseball team.

Santana now has an 2.94 ERA for the season with a 10-8 record. In comparison, Ubaldo Jimenez, who is leading the league in wins, has a 2.66 ERA with a record of 17-4. The Colorado Rockies aren't even that much better than the Mets. The Rockies are three games over .500 while the Mets are .500. It just comes down to the fact that the Mets don't support their ace.

CC Sabathia has a 3.02 ERA, but despite having a higher ERA than Santana he has seven more wins, and three less loses. He's been a decent pitcher this season, but because he is on the best team in baseball he is able to get more run support. This is way the win-loss stats are almost useless. If you just look at the record, 10-8 and 17-5, who would you think is the better pitcher? Clearly, the pitcher with more wins and less losses is.

If I was Santana I would think about asking for a trade. The team just doesn't hit when he pitches. Like Jose Reyes said after the game, Santana should have 15 wins by now.

Dodgers Aquire Barajas

Written by Brandon Lee 22:22 PM, August 22nd, 2010

According to the Los Angeles Dodgers twitter page, the Dodgers have acquired Mets catcher Rod Barajas from the Mets for cash considerations.

Barajas is hitting .225 with a .263 OBP, a .414 SLG, with 12 homers and 34 RBI.

The Mets have called up Jesus Feliciano to take Barajas' spot on the roster.

With Barajas off the team, Josh Thole will take over as full time catcher. Thole was expected to be the catcher of the future, but it looks like the future is here. Thole can't even believe it himself. “I look back and think, it’s crazy how fast this stuff changes.”

Thole's bat wasn't keeping him back from the majors, it was his catching abilities. “I just thought that his overall development had really accelerated when he came back,” Jerry Manuel said. “I saw a pretty good catcher.”

Andy Martino reports that as the players were saying bye to Barajas one player asked if he can go with him. I hope the Mets can find out who that was and get rid of him.

Rod Barajas was suppose to make his return from the DL yesterday. However, this was not the case.
