Series Preview: Rockies vs. Mets (05/09 ~ 05/11)

Written by Drucifer 17:17 PM, May 8th, 2011

New York Mets

@

Colorado Rockies

Coors Field
Coors Field

Monday, May 9th, 8:40 PM EDT
Coors Field

Chris Capuano, LH (2-3, 5.40)

Jhoulys Chacin, RH (4-2, 2.85)

Scouting Report:

METS: A tough-luck loser in Wednesday's game against the Giants, Capuano decreased his ERA to 5.40, its lowest point of the season. He'll look to continue that trend against the Rockies, who pummeled Capuano for seven runs in 5 2/3 innings last month.

ROCKIES: Chacin used his offspeed pitches to destroy the timing of D-backs hitters and showed enough command of his fastball to strike out three and yield just three hits in seven innings of a 6-4 victory in his most recent start.

Tuesday, May 10th, 8:40 PM EDT
Coors Field

Mike Pelfrey, RH (2-3, 6.06)

Jason Hammel, RH (3-1, 2.63)

Scouting Report:

METS: Untouched until the fourth inning of Thursday's game, Pelfrey submitted his second quality start of the season (and second in his last three tries). Don't expect Coors Field to bother him, either — Pelfrey has a career 3.24 ERA in Colorado.

ROCKIES: Hammel last gave up a run when the first batter of the game went deep two starts ago. He then tossed seven innings without a run in that outing, and repeated the feat with seven scoreless innings in a no-decision vs. the D-backs in his last start.

Wednesday, May 11th, 3:10 PM EDT
Coors Field

Jon Niese, LH (1-4, 4.71)

Ubaldo Jimenez, RH (0-2, 5.88)

Scouting Report:

METS: Niese's so-so season continued Friday against the Dodgers in a no-decision, in which the lefty walked three batters and allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings. Niese gave up five runs to the Rockies over six innings last month.

ROCKIES: Jimenez seemed to figure something out in his last start. He went six innings and struck out seven but walked five. He still left the game with the lead before the bullpen squandered it. He said the main thing was being able to make adjustments.

So close, yet not even close. Yet another Mets rally comes up short. David Wright almost hit a walk-off grand slam. But, as Brandon Lee said, "Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades". The Mets scored 2 in the 9th, 1 in the 8th, to come within 1 run. They had the bases loaded with 2 outs and David Wright just missed a grand slam. Jose Reyes continues to be hot, going 2-4 with a run batted in, a run scored, and a walk.

Pitching-wise, the Mets gave up too many runs. Something needs to be done pitching-wise. R.A. Dickey went 6.1 innings allowing 8 hits, 5 runs, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts.

Winning Pitcher: Greg Reynolds (1-0)

Losing Pitcher: R.A. Dickey (1-2)

Save: Matt Lindstrom (2)

Game 2 will be at 4:00pm.
