Harvey How Ya Doin?

Written by Brandon Lee 11:11 AM, April 23rd, 2011

Well in case you haven't heard, Matt Harvey (4-0) is pitching well. Very well. In his fourth start of the season last night Harvey went six innings, allowing no runs on four hits, two walks, and seven strike outs.

Harvey earns his fourth win of the year and his ERA for the season stays at 0.00. Kind of like my GPA for this semester.

R.A. Dickey Will Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

Written by Brian Kalinka 11:11 AM, April 3rd, 2011

New York Times — During the baseball season, R. A. Dickey’s job with the Mets requires ascending a hill only 10 ½ inches high, a modest summit from which he surveys the field and throws his knuckleball to batters. But Dickey’s ambition before next spring training is to climb a far more majestic mound, one that rises 19,336 feet above sea level, a snowy summit from which he will be able to gaze at the African continent below.

In a quest to satisfy a curiosity that dates to high school, and to raise awareness and money for a charitable cause, Dickey plans to lead a small group up the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, Mount KilimanjaroSince December, Dickey has been researching and planning his trip — which will take place in January — including arranging flights, hiring porters and guides to lead the expedition, and scouring his Mets contract to make sure he is allowed to pursue this endeavor.

Dickey will be joined by a group of athletes, including Kevin Slowey, his former teammate with the Minnesota Twins; Dave Racaniello, the Mets’ bullpen catcher; and John Zajac, the Mets’ physical therapist.

Although scaling Kilimanjaro is a demanding physical challenge — according to Dickey’s research, 30,000 people set out for the summit each year but only 18,000 make it — it does not require any technical climbing. It is just an exhausting eight-day trek upward, where altitude sickness can thwart the attempts of even some of the hardiest climbers.

R.A. Dickey is probably one of the weirder players in baseball, at least that I know of. The guy is certainly a character. Just pay attention to the way he talks with somebody like Kevin Burkhardt after a game. He just has a bit of a wacko personality and that's why I'm not surprised at all that R.A. has wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for almost 20 years now.

Also, here's another little tidbit in the New York Times article about bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello:

Racaniello demonstrated his mental and physical resolve when, on a dare, he rode a bicycle to spring training from Stamford, Conn., to Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The plan was always to get Johan 100% for 2012

Written by Zack Arenstein 9:09 AM, March 13th, 2011

According to Steve Popper of the Bergen Record, Johan Santana's throwing hasn't been going well and could be shut down for the rest of the season.

First off, obviously I want to see Johan on the field and healthy as soon as possible. When he's healthy, he's an utterly fantastic starting pitcher and can be a true difference maker on the mound. There is a reason he got the contract he has now. But as far as I'm concerned, the only thing that was important was getting Johan ready to be the ace once again in 2012.

We already knew he was going to miss about half the season whether or not his rehab went well. And if and when he comes back this season, no one expects to see vintage Johan out there at Citi Field. He'll still be working himself back into game shape at that point. On top of that, no one expects much out of the Mets in general this season. The front office is expected to have money to spend after the season when a lot of money is freed up from expiring contracts. And when this team has reloaded, they'll need Johan Santana to be their ace if they expect to compete in the tough NL East.

So, if Johan's rehab really isn't going well (and there are reports to the contrary), I'm not going to be terribly worried at this point in time. If we here the same thing a year from now I'll get worried. Until then, the Mets need to keep doing what they're doing with Johan. Take it slow and build up his strength. You want him to be healthy beyond this season for the final two years of his contract. Remember, this is a guy who has had some sort of surgical procedure done every year he's been with the Mets. That's something I'm sure the Mets want to avoid going forward. For now, don't get too worked up about this. True or not, the Mets have bigger worries about this team in my opinion.

  • Who Wants Reyes? The Mets

    Post on: 17:17 PM, February 1st, 2011

Paul Swyden from FanGraphs writes that the Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants and the Minnesota Twins might be interested in trading for Jose Reyes. I don't think the Brewers have the prospects to land Reyes after all the players they traded for Zack Greinke. The Tw...

  • Halfway point

    Post on: 11:11 AM, July 4th, 2010

Yesterday's game marked the midway point of the season, game 81. Right now, the team is 45-36, which extrapolates to a 90-72 record, This is right around the level I personally expected the team to be at, so I should be pleased, right? Maybe yes, maybe no. I thought it would be interesting to compare projections to actual pace as of the midway point to get an idea what we can expect for the ...

  • 2010 Mets Player Outlook: Francisco Rodriguez

    Post on: 17:17 PM, March 11th, 2010

Remember when J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez were going to be the best setup man/closer combination in baseball? The Mets went from no closer in 2008 to having two in 2009. But things really didn’t work out for the Mets with these players last season. Putz’s season ended after he pitched i...

  • 2010 Mets Player Outlook: Daniel Murphy

    Post on: 9:09 AM, March 10th, 2010

Last season, Daniel Murphy had a very challenging season. Not only was he playing in his first full season in New York’s big spotlight, but he was also asked to play a position that he'd never played before. He struggled in left field and the Mets knew that he didn’t have what it took to be a major league out...

He could be the most important player on the Mets for the 2010 year. This statement scares many Mets fans. It's not the idea of one player being responsible for the success of the season—it's who that player is. Oliver Perez. When fans hear the name Oliver Perez, they may feel many emotions, and they're u...

  • Who Could Bat First?

    Post on: 18:18 PM, February 21st, 2010

Jerry Manuel addressed the media to talk about Jose Reyes batting third in the Mets lineup. If Reyes is not the lead off hitter anymore who is? Well there some options the Mets can use to bat leadoff. They have Angel Pagan who batted leadoff in some games last year. ...

  • Kelvim Escobar: Low Risk/High Reward

    Post on: 19:19 PM, February 2nd, 2010

Just over a month ago, the New York Mets reached an agreement with former Angel, Kelvim Escobar. It has been reported that he will likely work out of the bullpen as a setup man for Francisco Rodriguez. The contract is incentive-laden, with Escobar earning a $1.25MM base salary, plus a $125K bonus for making the Opening Day roster. He can also make up to $2MM based on games pitched and $1MM more for games...

  • 2010 Mets Player Outlook: Jose Reyes

    Post on: 10:10 AM, February 1st, 2010

Jose Reyes is one of the highest energy players in sports. With his speed, glove and energy he brings to the field, he is one of the funnest players to watch. At the young age of 26 he's already been in the top 30 of the MVP voting 4 times, an All-Star twice and has won a Silver Slugger Award. Last season however,...
