PostGame: Nationals vs. Mets ~ 04.28

Written by Brandon Lee 9:09 AM, April 29th, 2011

The Mets (11-14) lost to the Washington Nationals (11-13) last night by the final score of 4-3. The loss end ther six game winning streak and their perfect record since Jason Bay returned from the DL.

Ian Desmond returned from paternity leave and the Mets would have preferred he spent and extra day with his newborn son. He went 2-4 with a triple, a home run and two runs scored.

Chris Capuano (2-2) started for the Mets and didn't have his best stuff. He went 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on ten hits, no walks and two strike outs. He was pulled in the sixth inning after 92 pitches. After this start, his ERA went from 5.95 to 6.04.

Livan Hernandez (3-2) haunted his ex-team not only with his arm, but with his bat. He went eight innings, giving up seven hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and five strike outs. His ERA dropped from 3.48 to 3.23 as he earned his third win of the year. He also went 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Mets were down 1-0 in the fourth inning, when Jose Reyes doubled to right field. The Mets got him in on back-to-back ground outs by Daniel Murphy and David Wright to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the inning the Nats came right back, with Desmond starting the inning with a leadoff triple. The Nats would then get back-to-back singles, scoring Desmond to make it 2-1, and giving them runners on first and second with no one out. Hernandez then put down a sac bunt, but there was miscommunication by the Mets, which led to everyone being safe and allowed Jerry Hairston Jr. to score from third, making it 3-1. The Nats would eventually load the bases with two out, but Capuano struck out Jayson Werth to end the inning.

The Mets would come back in the top of the fifth, with Ike Davis and Josh Thole getting things started with singles. Capuano put down a bunt, but like the Mets, they were unable to execute it right, and everyone was safe. The bases were load for Reyes and he hit a sac fly to center field to make it 3-2. Murphy then struck out to end the inning.

Again, the Nats would come back in the bottom of the inning, when Desmond cracked a solo home run to left, his third of the year, to make it 4-2.

The Mets would fight back once again. After a one out single by Carlos Beltran, he was moved to second base by a Jason Bay ground out. Davis then continued his hot hitting, ripping a double down the right field line to make it 4-3.

After that, there was o more scoring by either team.

In the ninth inning Thole singled for the third time in the game and was pinch ran for by Chin-lung Hu. With two outs he stole second base, and Willie Harris just needed a single off Drew Storen to possibly tie the game. Harris couldn't put the ball in play, striking out to end the game, giving the Nationals a 4-3 victory.

PostGame: Nationals vs. Mets ~ 04.27

Written by Brandon Lee 22:22 PM, April 27th, 2011

The Mets (11-13) defeated the Washington Nationals (10-13) by the final score of 6-3. The Mets have won their sixth game in a row, and have won their second series in a row. With the win the Mets are no longer in last place, as the pass the Nationals to move into fourth place. This was a great team win by the Mets, with everyone playing a part.

R.A. Dickey (1-3) started for the Mets and pitched well going 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, one walk, and three strike outs. Dickey got a no decision for the game and lower his ERA from 4.10 to 3.82.

Tom Gorzelanny (0-2) pitched even better going 6.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits, one walk and struck out four. He was pulled after just 85 pitches and also got the no decision.

Pedro Beato (1-0), who pitched in the bottom of the eighth gave up one unearned run on one hit, and got credited for the win. It was his first career win and he keeps his season ERA at zero.

Sean Burnett (0-1) was not so lucky. He pitched two thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on four hits and one walk. He got the loss.

The Mets were down 2-1 in the eighth inning when Jose Reyes hit a double to left-center field but was thrown out trying to turn it into a triple. Reyes, Chip Hale, and Terry Collins all argued with the umpire who made the call, but none of them got ejected. After watching the replay it was clear that the umpire made the wrong call. It was clear that Reyes beat the tag, but the ump thought that his hand came off the bag. It did not. The next batter, Daniel Murphy seemed to channel everyone's angry and blasted a solo home run, his second of the year, to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the eighth Jason Bay miss played a sliding catch that resulted in a double for Adam LaRoche. A pass ball off the glove of Josh Thole moved him over to third, and he scored on a sac fly from Wilson Ramos to give the Nats a 3-2 lead.

Bay and Ike Davis started the top of the ninth with back-to-back singles with set up the sac bunt for Willie Harris. He pushed the bunt up the third base line and the third baseman didn't cover, forcing the pitcher, Burnett to cover the bunt. He slid to his knee and tried to throw out the seedy Harris, but his throw was wide and the Mets had the bases load with no one out. Chin-lung Hu hit a pinch-hit sac fly to deep right field, that moved all of the runners up a base, including Bay from third to tie the game at 3-3. Thole then hit a ground ball to the drawn in infield, but with Davis going on contact, the short stop didn't have a play at home and threw Thole out at first, giving the Mets a 4-3 lead. The Nats then intentionally walked Reyes, to bring up Murphy who doubled sharply down the right field line plating both Harris and Reyes, making it a 6-3 play game.

Frankie Rodriguez came on for the save in the ninth and gave up a double to Roger Bernadina, but nothing else, earning his sixth save of the year and locking down a nice come for behind win for the Mets, 6-3.

Next Game:

The Mets will go for the series sweep of the Nationals tomorrow with Chris Capuano (2-1, 5.95 ERA) taking the hill for the Mets facing ex-Met Livan Hernandez (2-1, 3.48 ERA). Game time is set for 7:05 PM and the game will be aired on SNY.

Final Say

Wow, really nice win for the Mets tonight, who have no won six games in a row after their awful start.

Marvin Hudson who called Reyes out at third in the top of the eighth mad a terrible call and I think he knew it. First off, it was an amazing throw by Rick Ankel, the ex-pitcher, from deep left-center field. Threw it past the cut off and one hopped it the third, very impressive. With most outfielders there would have not even been a play at third. Anyway, after the call Reyes threw down his helmet, and was yelling in the face of Hudson. Hale stepped in front of Reyes to protect him and was also yelling at Hudson. Hale then came running out to protect them both and was yelling at Hudson. Not many people, other than the Nationals and their fans, were happy with Hudson. I feel like Hale did everything thing he could to get ejected other than bumping the ump, which he came very close to doing. He was all up in his face yelling, pointing at the third base bag and pointing in Hudson's face. I feel like Hudson didn't eject anyone because he knew he made an awful call.

However, it may have been the best thing for the Mets, as it looked to have pumped everyone up, especially Murphy, who belted a home run and then had a big two out, two run double. Altogether, he plated three runs in two innings.

In the ninth inning the Mets did everything right. Good base running by Bay on the trapped single by Davis, a nice bunt by Harris, Hu driving the ball and advancing all the runners, Davis running on contact with the ground out by Thole. I feel like the Mets played like a complete team for the first time in a while.

The Mets could have easily just collapsed under the bad call by Hudson in the top of the eighth, the misplayed ball by Bay and Murphy not covering second in the bottom of the eighth. But the team didn't, and they fought back to win a tough game.

Dickey pitched a typical Dickey-type game. Giving up a lot of hits, some walks, but not a lot of runs. The Mets really need him to start pitching like he was last season. This staff can be solid if Chris Young can pitch the way he did in his first few starts and if Chris Capuano can do something close to what he did in his last start.

The Mets bullpen is a completely new animal now. Tonight, between Ryota Igarashi, Beato, and Frankie they pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two hits, one strike out, and an unearned run. Hopefully they can keep up the success because this bullpen does have the potential to be a strong point for this team, especially when they start mixing Dillon Gee into things.

The Mets have all the talent to be a playoff team. It's just staying healthy and playing tough the whole season. I still don't think the Mets will make the playoffs, but I hope the surprise me and a whole lot of other people.

PostGame: Mets vs. Diamondbacks ~ 04.23

Written by Brandon Lee 19:19 PM, April 23rd, 2011

The Mets (8-13) defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks (8-11) at Citi Field by the final score of 6-4. The start of the game was delayed due to rain, and there was a question on whether or not they would be able to play the game. But the rain let up, and the Mets won their third straight game, putting them five games under .500.

Dillon Gee (2-0) started for the Mets and pitched well, going six innings, giving up four runs (two of them were earned runs), five hits, one walk and five strike outs. Gee earned his second win in as many starts, and his ERA is now at 2.31.

Barry Enright started for the Diamondbacks and wasn't fooling the Mets at all, but was able to keep his team in it and battle around the hits. He went 5.2 innings giving up five runs on 12 hits, one walk and two strike outs.

Trailing 1-0 after the top of the first inning, the Mets answer right back. With Jose Reyes (walk) on third and David Wright (single and a stolen base) on second with two out, Jason Bay smacked a single to center field, bringing in both runners to make it 2-1.

With two outs in the fourth inning Bay crushed an opposite field solo home run, his first of the year, to make it 3-1. The next batter Ike Davis hit a solo home run to right field that landed about 20 rows back in the upper deck, to make it 4-1. It was Davis' fourth home run of the year and his third in the past three games. It was the first time the Mets have hit back-to-back home runs this season.

In the top of the fifth inning with a runner on first, Miguel Montero hit a ground ball to Daniel Murphy's left side, who, instead of getting the sure out at first, tried to get the runner out at second base. He ended up missing the ball altogether, and the DBacks had runners at first and second with one out. Ryan Roberts then hit a foul pop-up that Davis over ran trying to make an over-the-shoulder catch, and it hit off his glove. He then hit a sharp single up the middle to drive in a run and make it 4-2. With two outs Gerardo Parra hit a single to center field to bring in another run to make it 4-3.

In the top of the sixth, Montero crushed a solo home run to the bridge in right-center field, to tie the game up at 4-4.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth with one out, Justin Turner hit a pinch-hit double to right field. Later with two outs, Murphy slapped a single to right field to bring in Turner and make it 5-4.

In the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs, Reyes hit a single that almost took the David Hernandez's head off. Hernandez then balked with allowed Reyes to go to second. Murphy then singled to right field to bring in Reyes to make it 6-4.

Frankie Rodriguez came on for the save in the ninth and allowed back-to-back singles with one out. With runners on second and third, Frankie struck out  ex-Met Xavier Nady for the second out and then got Chris Young swinging to end the game, earning his fourth save of the year, and giving the Mets a 6-4 victory.

Final Say:

Very nice win for the Mets today, who are now 3-0 since Jason Bay returned to the line-up. All six of their runs were scored with two outs, which is a great sign. Gee pitched solid besides a rough first and fourth inning but with Chris Young set to come off the DL on Tuesday, this might have been his last start. Gee is too good to be sent down to the minors and I think the right move would be to put him in the bullpen.

Murphy looked a little lost at second base today, making that error in the fourth and covering first base when he should have been covering second base, but he made up for it with two, two out RBIs and drove in the game winning run.

I'm could get use to watching Izzy come out in the eighth in for the whole year. Gave up a hit and a stolen base, but he didn't allow a run, collected two strike outs and earned his third hold of the year. Ladies and gentleman, I think the Mets have found their new set-up man.

Reyes got on base three times today and didn't steal a base, kind of disappointed in that. In any case, he his red hot right now, getting his average up to .323 and his OBP to .364. Maybe they should trade him now…

I haven't found out how far Davis' ball want yet or if they are still waiting for it to land to measure it, but it had to be around 450 feet. The thing was an absolute bomb.

Next Game:

The Mets will go for their first series sweep of 2011 taking on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the final game of the three game series. Jon Niese will take the mound for the Mets and he'll be opposed by Armando Galarraga. Game time is set for 1:10 PM with the game being aired on SNY.

PostGame: Mets vs. Diamondbacks ~ 04.22

Written by Brandon Lee 10:10 AM, April 23rd, 2011

The Mets (7-13) defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks (8-10) at Citi Field last night by the final score of 4-1. The Mets have now won two games in a row, and are now six games under .500. The Mets are also 2-0 since Jason Bay has come off the DL.

Mike Pelfrey (1-2) started for the Mets and had his first good start of the year, going seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, two walks, and four strike outs. He earns his first win of the year and his ERA drops from 9.72 to 7.23.

Joe Saunders start for the DBacks and pitched well, going six plus innings, allowing one run on two hits, three walks, and four strike outs. He did not get charged with the loss.

The DBacks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Kelly Johnson and Justin Upton hit back-to-back doubles.

The Mets didn't get on the board until the seventh inning, scoring two runs. After David Wright started the inning with a walk, Ike Davis came up with two outs and hit a home run to center field. At first, it was ruled a double, but the play went under review and it was ruled a home run, giving the Mets a 2-1 lead.

With the bases loaded and on one out in the eighth inning, Carlos Beltran singled to bring home Jose Reyes to make it 3-1. Jason Bay then struck out, Davis fouled out and then Mike Nickeas hit a ground ball to third that looked like it would end the inning. But Ryan Robert made a error, allowing Daniel Murphy to come home, making it 4-1.

Jason Isringhausen came in for the eighth inning and pitched a one-two-three inning.

Frankie Rodriguez came in for the save in the ninth and allowed one walk, but nothing else, striking out Gerardo Parra to end the game, getting his third save of the year, and giving the Mets a 4-1 victory.

PostGame: Braves vs. Mets ~ 04.17

Written by Brandon Lee 18:18 PM, April 17th, 2011

The Mets (5-11) defeated the Braves (7-9) at Turner Field today by a final score of 3-2. The Mets avoid being swept in their second straight series, and snap their seven game losing streak, their longest April losing streak since 1974.

Dillon Gee (1-0) started for the Mets and pitched well, going 5.2 innings, giving up one runs on five hits, two walks, and four strike outs. I think Gee could have a nice future in this rotation. Don't think he's going to be an ace or anything, but could be a solid four or five type of pitcher.

Speaking of future aces, Tommy Hanson (1-3) started for the Braves and didn't have his best stuff. He went five innings, giving up three runs on five hits, two walks, and nine strike outs. His ERA for the season jumped from 3.38 to 3.86.

The Mets got off to a quick start in this game, with Jose Reyes doubling to right in the first inning. Batting in the two hole, Josh Thole singled to drive in Reyes to make it 1-0. After a David Wright strike out, Carlos Beltran was hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second with one out, Ike Davis singled to right field, scoring Thole from second to make it 2-0. Angel Pagan and Willie Harris struck out to end the inning.

Dan Uggla led off the bottom of the second inning with a triple to right-center field. After a walk to Eric Hinske, Freddie Freeman singled to right field to bring in Uggla and make it 2-1. Alex Gonzalez then blooped a single into center field to load the bases with no out one. Matt Young popped-up to Reyes for the first out of the inning. Hanson then came up, and with a 1-2 count, the Braves put on the suicide squeeze. Hanson missed the bunt, striking out, and then Thole ran down Hinske and tagged him out to end the inning.

In the fifth inning Reyes started things off with a single and then stole second base. Once again, Thole came up and singled, scoring Reyes from second to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Mets brought in Chris Capuano to get Freeman for the final out of the inning. The Braves sent up Larry Jones to pinch hit, and he grounded out to end the inning.

R.A. Dickey came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning and gave up no runs on one hits, no walks and struck out one batter.

Jason Isringhausen came in to pitch the eighth inning and the first pitch he threw Jason Heyward hit a solo home run to make it 3-2. He then gave up a walk to Brian McCann. After that, Izzy settled down, getting a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play, and then striking out Hinske to end the inning.

Frankie Rodriguez came in for the save in the ninth inning. He walked Larry on four pitches, and then he advanced to second on a sacrifice. He then got to third on a ground out. The Braves then sent up Brooks Conrad up as a pinch hitter, with the game tying run 90 feet away. Frankie struck him out to end the game, getting his second save of the year and the Mets fifth win on the season.

Next Game:

The Mets get an off day tomorrow before coming home to take on the Houston Astros for three games. Jon Niese will start the first game for the Mets and he will take on Wandy Rodriguez. Game time is set for 7:10 P.M. and the game will be aired on SNY.

Final Say:

Oh man, they needed this one. Watching this game it looked like Terry Collins were managing it like a must win game, and it was pretty close to one. He brought in Capuano and Dickey as relief pitchers because it was their throw days. This is something I'm surprised more teams don't do. If one of your best pitchers is going to be throwing an inning of work on the side, why not put him in the game to throw that inning?

Reyes is just locked in right now and he is hitting the ball very well. I didn't mind Thole in the number two spot, and that might actually be really good for him, but I would like for Collins to stick with one line-up for a while and not change it after two days. Every time your team loses it doesn't mean that you have to change the line-up around for the next game.

This next series against the Astros is very important for the Mets. The Astros are a bad baseball team, and taking two of three is a must and should be expecting to sweep this team. Ipso facto, if they don't sweep them I'm not going to be happy.
