In the bottom of the inning the Nats came right back, with Desmond starting the inning with a leadoff triple. The Nats would then get back-to-back singles, scoring Desmond to make it 2-1, and giving them runners on first and second with no one out. Hernandez then put down a sac bunt, but there was miscommunication by the Mets, which led to everyone being safe and allowed Jerry Hairston Jr. to score from third, making it 3-1. The Nats would eventually load the bases with two out, but Capuano struck out Jayson Werth to end the inning.
The Mets would come back in the top of the fifth, with Ike Davis and Josh Thole getting things started with singles. Capuano put down a bunt, but like the Mets, they were unable to execute it right, and everyone was safe. The bases were load for Reyes and he hit a sac fly to center field to make it 3-2. Murphy then struck out to end the inning.
Again, the Nats would come back in the bottom of the inning, when Desmond cracked a solo home run to left, his third of the year, to make it 4-2.
The Mets would fight back once again. After a one out single by Carlos Beltran, he was moved to second base by a Jason Bay ground out. Davis then continued his hot hitting, ripping a double down the right field line to make it 4-3.
After that, there was o more scoring by either team.
In the ninth inning Thole singled for the third time in the game and was pinch ran for by Chin-lung Hu. With two outs he stole second base, and Willie Harris just needed a single off Drew Storen to possibly tie the game. Harris couldn't put the ball in play, striking out to end the game, giving the Nationals a 4-3 victory.
