The New York Mets (23-23) shut out the Philadelphia Phillies (26-18) last night, defeating them in the first game of this series by the score of 8-0. The Mets improve their record to .500 and are now four games back of the Phillies. The Mets are now 9-7 in first games of the series this season are are 4-4 against the Phillies.
R.A. Dickey pitched great last night, setting the Phillies down one-two-three in the first inning. Jose Reyes lead off the first inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Luis Castillo, stole third, and scored on a sharp ground out by Jason Bay.
The Phillies would load the bases with no one out in the second inning, after Ryan Howard, Jason Werth, and Raul Ibanez started the inning with three straight singles. Howard's single was a line drive up the middle that hit off of Dickey's non pitching elbow, but he was able to shake it off and stay in the game. He then got Carlos Ruiz to ground into a one-two-three double play. He walked the number eight place hitter Juan Castro and struck out the pitcher Jamie Moyer to end the inning.
With one out Angle Pagan hit a slow roller to third which he beat out for an infield hit. Rod Barajas then single to left and Pagan went to first to third. Jeff Francoeur then singled to left field to make it a 2-0 Mets lead.
The Mets added another run in the fourth inning when David Wright hit a pop-up double that fell in between center field and second base. Pagan then walked and Barajas hit a deep fly out, which Wright was able to advance to third on. Francoeur then hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Wright for third, and making it a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning the Mets manufactured another Reyes-run after Reyes lead off the inning with a single. Reyes then stole second base and went to third on a ground out by Castillo. Bay then singled to left, scoring Reyes and making it a 4-0 game.
In the bottom of the sixth Francoeur hit an opposite field, one out double and came into score on a pitch hit single from Chris Carter, making it a 5-0 Mets lead.
Raul Valdes came into pitch the rest of the game, and pitched just as well as Dickey. He came into the game and walked Shane Victorino and gave up a double to Placido Polanco. So with runner on second and third and no one out, the Phillies looked like they were going to finally get on the board with their big hitters up. However, Valdes struck out Chase Utley and Howard and got Werth to ground out to end the inning.
Nelson Figueroa then came into pitch, making his first appearance against the Mets since they let him go. The Mets had two outs and Barajas on first when Valdes double to right-center, making it a 6-0 game. Reyes then tripled to right-center, making it a 7-0 game. Castillo then hit a bloop single, scoring Reyes from third, making it a 8-0 game.
Valdes would allowed a single to Polanco in the ninth, who was responsible for the only two hits off of Valdes for the night, but that would be all, striking out Howard again to end the game.
