PostGame: Brewers vs. Mets ~ 05/30

The New York Mets (26-25) defeated the Milwaukee Brewers (21-29) by the final score of 10-4. The Mets were able to win one game of the three game series and avoid the sweep. The Mets are now one game above .500 and are in third place in the NL East, three games behind the first place Phillies.

Hitting:

  • Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, David Wright, Angel Pagan, Jeff Francoeur and Henry Blanco all had multiple hits.
  • Angel Pagan hit a two run home run in the seventh inning, his fourth of the year.
  • Jeff Francoeur had a huge day, going 4-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored.

Pitching:

  • R.A. Dickey started the game and went seven innings, four runs on nine hits, no walks, and three strike outs. He earns his second win in a row and now has a record of 2-0. 
  • Elmer Dessens and Francisco Rodriguez each pitched a scoreless and hit-less inning of work,

Post Game: New York Cubans vs. Milwaukee Bears

When I turned on the TV tonight to watch the game, I was unaware of the jerseys the teams would be wearing. I was a bit confused to say the least, I almost starting cheering for the Bears actually, they were wearing blue. Anyway…

New York CubansThe New York Mets (25-25) fell to the Milwaukee Brewers (21-28) last night in Milwaukee. The Mets strange inability to play good baseball on the road continued. They gave up 3 home runs in the game, including a Grand Slam hit by Corey Hart in the 1st inning, the same guy who also hit the walk-off homerun the night before and would go on to hit another later in the game. This was another strange loss for the Mets, in that no 0's were put up on the scoreboard until the 5th inning, both teams scored in every inning prior to that one. Fernando Nieve was not good, going just 2 inning and giving up 5 runs, pushing his season ERA to over 6. He took the loss while Todd Coffey came out of the bullpen to get the win for the Brewers.

Hitting:

- The Mets were able to score some runs at least, putting up 6 in the game. The highlight at the plate would have to be Ike Davis' 3-run homerun in the 4th inning.

- Jose Reyes, Jason Bay, Angel Pagan, and Jeff Francoeur all had 2 hits in the game.

- David Wright had a noticably horrid night at the plate. He had several opportunities to come through and put the Mets back in the game, but he just coudn't. He struck out twice and left 1 man in scoring position.

Pitching:

- For the first time in awhile, the pitching was unable to give the team a chance to win the game. It was to be expected I suppose, with Fernando Nieve, who has been having a rough go of it of late, coming in from the bullpen to start the game. He would only go 2 innings.

- Once he was done, we knew we were in trouble when Oliver Perez made his way out of the bullpen. He wasn't quite as bad, but he did give up a home run.

- Elmer Dessens, Jenrry Mejia, and Ryota Igarashi all came in and put up scoreless innings following them, each giving up a hit in the process.

MVP:

I don't really know if anyone played all that well, but since someone has to get it, Ike Davis will receive it for his 3-run homerun that put them back in the game in the 4th inning. 

Next Game:

The Mets will attempt to avoid the sweep today at 2:10 EST when the Mets send R.A. Dickey (1-0) to the mound to face Randy Wolf (4-4). You can catch the game on SNY and WFAN.

Final Thought:

I don't really understand. Are the Mets brains and talent bolted down at Citi Field somewhere? Am I missing something. They're absolutely stellar at home, they have the best home record in baseball. But they can't play a lick on the road. The pitching was awful, Nieve never stood a chance. Dickey needs to come in and give him a good chance, and this is something the Mets have no right to expect from him. He's a journeyman knuckleballer for a reason. He won't keep throwing gems all the time. But they need it, to give themselves any hope of a ..500 roadtrip. Good luck R.A. Dickey (or as my friends call him, Really Awesome Dickey), I hope you can hold on to that magic a little longer.

PostGame: Mets vs. Phillies ~ 05/27

The New York Mets (25-23) completed a three game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies (26-20), shutting them out again by the final score of 3-0. The Mets shut out the Phillies in every game this series, and are now two games above .500 and the only other time the Mets shut out the same team in a three-game series came back in 1969 against the Phillies. The Mets are now two games back of the first place Phillies and are in third place in the NL East, a half game behind the Atlanta Braves for second. The Mets have won five games in a row and seven out of their last ten.

Hitting:

The Mets got out to an early lead again in this game. Jose Reyes singled to start the game and moved over the second base and a ground out by Luis Castillo. Jason Bay then smacked a double left-center field which one hoped the wall, scoring Reyes from second and making it a 1-0 game.

No one would score again until the bottom of the seventh when the Mets came to bat. With Henry Blanco on second base and Fernando Tatis on first, Jose Reyes lofted a double into the left field center. Blanco and Tatis would both come into score, and the Mets took a 3-0 lead.

Jose Reyes went 3-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Reyes has brought his average all the way up to .249, and is 12 for his last 23. Reyes had his fifth straight multiple hit game and has had one in six of his last seven games played. Before the stretch Reyes was hitting .210. Seven days later his average has gone up .039.

Angel Pagan went 2-4 with a stolen base. He has a six game hitting streak going and has reached base in 12 straight games. 

Pitching:

Mike Pelfrey started the game, and although his command wasn't there, he pitched very well working around his five walks. He gave up no runs in seven innings pitched, struck out five batters and only allowed three hits. Pelfrey improves his record to 7-1 and lowers his ERA down to 2.54.

Pedro Feliciano pitched the eighth inning and allowed one hit, but that was it. He struck out two batters in the inning and picked up his sixth hold of the season.

Francisco Rodriguez came in the close the game in the ninth and had to do it against the Phillies best hitters. He got Chase Utley to line out to Jeff Francoeur and then got Ryan Howard to fly out to Jason Bay. Rodriguez then struck out Jayson Werth to end the ball game and gave the Mets a 3-0 victory. Rodriguez earns his ninth save of the year and his ERA is now 1.88.

Here's was Gary Cohen's reaction to the strike out of Werth:

"He struck him out and the ballgame is over! It's seven minutes to midnight, the goose egg sweep is complete! A stunning three game series, as the Mets sweep three straight from the Phillies, 27 innings, 27 zeros."

MVP:

  • Jose Reyes stayed hot with another big day at the plate. He got a big two RBI double in the seventh inning that really gave the Mets some much needed breathing room from their 1-0 lead.

Next Game:

  • The Mets will travle to Milwakee to take on the Brewers for the first game of a three game series. Johan Santana will get the ball for the Mets and he'll be opposed by Yovani Gallardo, Game time is set for 8:10 P.M. and the game will be aired on SNY.

PostGame: Mets vs. Phillies ~ 05/26

The New York Mets (24-23) defeated the Philadelphia Phillies (26-19) by the final score of 5-0, shutting them out in back-to-back games. They've won the series against the Phillies and will go for the sweep tomorrow. Hisanori Takahashi continued the streak of outstanding starting pitching for Mets starters, going six scoreless inning, matching what R.A. Dickey did last night. Takahashi has thrown 12 scoreless innings since taking over for Oliver Perez.

In the bottom of the second inning, Ike Davis led off with a double. Angel Pagan then singled, moving Davis to third. With Rod Barajas up, Pagan stole second. Barajas then hit a sac fly to left field to score Davis from third.

The Mets would add another run in the third inning when Jose Reyes led off the inning with a home run to make it a 2-0 game.

Neither team would put a run up until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Mets came to bat. David Wright led off the inning with a double past the diving Shane Victorino. Angel Pagan the had a bunt single up the third base line to put runners on first and third. With Barajas up, Pagan stole second base again. This time Barajas drove both runners in from third and second with a double down the left field line to make it a 4-0 game. Alex Cora then pinch hit for Takahashi with one out, and hit a ball up the middle that hit off the mound. Chase Utley fielded it and threw to first but Ryan Howard couldn't pick it out of the dirt. It went down as an error for Utley, but it was a ball that Howard most certainly should have made. Reyes then singled to right field, scoring Barajas from third, making it a 5-0.

Fernando Nieve came in to pitch the ninth inning and set the Phillies down one-two-three, with Reyes making a nice jumping catch to end the game, and gave the Mets a 5-0 victory.

The Mets are now back above .500 and are only three games behind the first place Phillies.

The last time the Mets had back-to-back shut outs of the Phillies was July 17 and 18, 1998. Pitching for the Mets was Hideo Nomo and Al Leiter.

  • Jose Reyes stayed hot, going 2-4 with his first home run of the year and two RBI. He is now hitting .238. Rod Barajas went 1-3 driving in three RBI with a double and a sac fly.
  • Angel Pagan went 2-4 with two singles and two stolen bases. Luis Castillo didn't get a hit, but drew two walks and stole two bases as well.
  • Jeff Francoeur went 0-3, but had some nice at-bats and hit the ball hard, but had nothing to show for it.

Pitching:

  • The Mets starting pitchers are starting to spoil us. Hisanori Takahashi went six innings, giving up no runs, on five hits, no walks and six strike outs. Takahashi earns his fourth win of the year and lowers his ERA to 2.13.
  • Jenrry Mejia and Ryota Igarashi both threw a scoreless inning of work, giving up one hit.
  • Fernando Nieve threw a one-two-three inning in the ninth to nail down the game for the Mets.
  • The Mets didn't allow a walk tonight to the Phillies.

MVP:

  • Hisanori Takahashi gets the honor for tonight's game, keeping the Phillies off balance and off the board the whole game. In the post game, Jerry Manuel said that Takahashi's command is up there with the best pitchers in the league. Manuel added that the tryout for Takahashi is over, and he is in the rotation for good now.

Next Game:

  • The Mets will go for the sweep of the first place Phillies tomorrow night, with Mike Pelfrey taking on Cole Hamels. Game time is set for 7:10 P.M. and will be aired on SNY.

PostGame: Mets vs. Phillies ~ 05/25

The New York Mets (23-23) shut out the Philadelphia Phillies (26-18) last night, defeating them in the first game of this series by the score of 8-0. The Mets improve their record to .500 and are now four games back of the Phillies. The Mets are now 9-7 in first games of the series this season are are 4-4 against the Phillies.

Jose Reyes lead off the first inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Luis Castillo, stole third, and scored on a sharp ground out by Jason Bay.

The Phillies would load the bases with no one out in the second inning, after Ryan Howard, Jason Werth, and Raul Ibanez started the inning with three straight singles. Howard's single was a line drive up the middle that hit off of Dickey's non pitching elbow, but he was able to shake it off and stay in the game. He then got Carlos Ruiz to ground into a one-two-three double play. He walked the number eight place hitter Juan Castro and struck out the pitcher Jamie Moyer to end the inning.

With one out Angle Pagan hit a slow roller to third which he beat out for an infield hit. Rod Barajas then single to left and Pagan went to first to third. Jeff Francoeur then singled to left field to make it a 2-0 Mets lead.

The Mets added another run in the fourth inning when David Wright hit a pop-up double that fell in between center field and second base. Pagan then walked and Barajas hit a deep fly out, which Wright was able to advance to third on. Francoeur then hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Wright for third, and making it a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth inning the Mets manufactured another Reyes-run after Reyes lead off the inning with a single. Reyes then stole second base and went to third on a ground out by Castillo. Bay then singled to left, scoring Reyes and making it a 4-0 game.

In the bottom of the sixth Francoeur hit an opposite field, one out double and came into score on a pitch hit single from Chris Carter, making it a 5-0 Mets lead.

Raul Valdes came into pitch the rest of the game, and pitched just as well as Dickey. He came into the game and walked Shane Victorino and gave up a double to Placido Polanco. So with runner on second and third and no one out, the Phillies looked like they were going to finally get on the board with their big hitters up. However, Valdes struck out Chase Utley and Howard and got Werth to ground out to end the inning.

Nelson Figueroa then came into pitch, making his first appearance against the Mets since they let him go. The Mets had two outs and Barajas on first when Valdes double to right-center, making it a 6-0 game. Reyes then tripled to right-center, making it a 7-0 game. Castillo then hit a bloop single, scoring Reyes from third, making it a 8-0 game.

Valdes would allowed a single to Polanco in the ninth, who was responsible for the only two hits off of Valdes for the night, but that would be all, striking out Howard again to end the game.

  • Jeff Francoeur (2-3) and Rod Barajas (2-4) each had two hits with Francoeur knocking in two RBI.

Pitching:

  • R.A. Dickey went six innings, allowed no runs on seven hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. He lowers his ERA to 1.50 and earns his first win of the year.
  • Raul Valdes threw three innings, gave up no runs on two hits, two walks, and four strike outs. He earns his first save of the year and lowers his ERA to 2.86.

MVP:

  • I'm going to give it to Jose Reyes for his big day and sparking the offense.

Next Game:

  • The Mets will play the second game of this series against the Phillies as they send Hisanori Takahashi to the mound to take on Joe Blanton. The game is set to start at 7:10 P.M. and will be aired on SNY.
