Mets Prospect Corey Oswalt Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Year

Oswalt leads the league in ERA.

Mets pitching prospect Corey Oswalt, who is 23 years old and was drafted by the organization in the seventh round back in 2012, has been named the pitcher of the year in the Double-A Eastern League. At the moment, he leads the league with a 2.37 ERA, which he has racked up over the span of 23 starts totaling 129.1 innings. With 111 strikeouts and 39 walks, he’s currently at 7.7 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine.

Oswalt did not make our preseason list of the Mets’ top twenty-five prospects coming into the season, and the mlb.com rankings have him at 29th in the organization at the moment. Despite that relatively light prospect-stock status, this season has been a big step forward for the righty considering the combination of good health and good results. In early August, Minor League Ball wrote him up, saying at the time:

As for his pitch arsenal, Oswalt has a fastball that can reach up to 95 miles per hour along with a curveball, slider, and a changeup. While the strikeouts haven’t come in bunches, he does do a good job pitching to contact. Since May 25, he’s given up a total of three home runs (all solo).
